At the airport

Jen: What's the first thing you want to do when we get to London, Mike?

Mike: I don't know. I really want to see the Tower of London and I suppose we have to go to Buckingham Palace as soon as possible.

Jen: I just hope the weather isn't too bad. My uncle went last year in August and he said it rained every day for a week.

Mike: I think it is going to be sunny this week so don't worry. Now where is our plane flying from? Do you know which gate we need to go to?

Jen: I really can't remember. Look, over there, there is one of those TV screens with all the flight departure information. Let's go and have a look at that. We still have a lot of time. Why do you always get so nervous at airports?

Mike: I'm not nervous Jen, I just don't want to be the last person getting on the plane. Remember last year going to Germany when everybody was waiting for us. That was so embarrassing.

Jen: OK, it's all up there, look. There are three flights to London. British Airways leaves at 10 o'clock, American Airlines also leaves at 10 o'clock and Air India leaves at 10 past 10. Who are we flying with? I know it's not Air India, is it?

Mike: American Airlines. We fly with them. So the departure is 10 o'clock but what gate is it? It says "please wait in departure lounge" up on the screen so I guess we have to just wait here.

Jen: That's very strange because the British Airways flight leaves at the same time, but Gate 7 is written up there.

Mike: I don't know, Jen. Maybe there's a problem but we don't have very long to wait.

Jen: Oh, look! Our flight information is there. We have to go to Gate 24, flight boards at 9.30.

Mike: Great! Now, where is gate 24? Is it on the eastern or the western side of the airport?

Jen: Look at that yellow sign. We have to catch the airport shuttle for all gates from 10 to 30.

Mike: Let's go ... that's the west of the airport and it takes about 10 minutes to get there.

Jen: We're going to London!

Teachers thought he was stupid, but he couldn't hear well. His mother was a teacher and she took him from school and taught him at home. She always believed in Thomas and thought he was really smart. Edison opened a new laboratory in Menlo Park, NJ, in 1876. This place later become known as an "invention factory," since they worked on several different inventions at any given time there.  He had many assistants in his laboratory in Menlo  Park near New York. They worked together on his inventions. Edison also organized some companies, some of them still work, like  «General Electrics».

Thomas Alva Edison made a great influence on modern life, because of his inventions such as a light bulb,  a phonograph, and a motion pictures camera. He also improved the telegraph and telephone.  Edison continued to work and invent till he was over 70, often working 16 hours a day!  During his long and productive life Edison made 1,300 inventions. Edison also managed to become a successful manufacturer and businessman, marketing his inventions to the public. TYPES OF MUSIC

Music, like language, is a uniquely human form of communication. As with language, there are many different kinds. In North America, people listen to jazz, rock, classical, folk, country, and many other kinds of music. Each kind of music has its own rules and «speaks» to us in its own way.

Country music is from America. It’s sometimes called bluegrass or mountain music. Each song tells a story about modern life, love and feelings. Musicians play the banjo, and sometimes the violin or harmonica. Famous country singers are Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson.

Celtic music is the traditional music of Celtic people — people of Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The song tell us funny or sad stories. Some have no words at all. In Celtic music you can hear violins, drums and guitars. Two famous Celtic bands are «Clannad» and «The Chieftains».

Reggae music comes from Jamaica in the Caribbean. It’s called the music of the poor, because the songs are about the problems people have. The main instrument is the electric bass. Musicians also play the piano, drums and the guitar. Some famous reggae bands are «The Wailers», «UB40» and «The Maytals».

I started playing golf three years ago when I was thirteen. My father often played with his friends after work and sometimes I went with him and watched. One day he let me take a shot and then later he taught me how to play.  Now I am a real golf fan.

The equipment can be very expensive. You need golf clubs, of course, balls and a tee. Some people wear special shoes, but trainers are ok.

You have to put your ball on a tee and then hit it with a club towards the hole. You must try to get the ball in the hole with fewer  shots than your opponent. It’s really difficult when you start, but you get better with practice. I play most weekends and I am quite good now. When we go on holiday my dad always finds a golf course nearby. I like watching golf on television and Tiger Woods is my favorite player.

I started at a judo club near my house a year ago. My mother thought it was a good idea  for girls to lean self-defense. I enjoy going to the club because I met a lot of new friends. You don’t need any special equipment. You just need to wear loose white trousers and a jacket called “ judo-ai”. There are no buttons on the jacket and you use a belt. The color of the belt is important because it shows how good you are. The best judo teachers or “ Dans” wear a black belt. My belt is orange—I am getting quite good. In judo you fight your opponent on a square carpet, 10 meters X 10 meters. You get points for lifting, throwing and holding your opponent. I go to my judo club every Tuesday and Thursday after school and our club plays matches against other clubs. I like watching judo in the Olympics. But I don’t think I’ll ever be that good.

The guitar is a musical instrument with ancient roots that is used in a wide variety of musical styles. It typically has six strings, but four, seven, eight, ten and twelve-stringed guitars also exist. Guitars are recognized as one of the first instruments in blues, country, rock music and many forms of pop. They can also be a solo classical instrument. Traditionally guitars are constructed of combinations of various woods and strung with either nylon or steel strings. Guitars are made and repaired by luthiers.
